In Bangladesh, starting from the next fiscal year, people who own more than one car may have to pay an extra charge as a means of protecting the environment. The government aims to discourage excessive vehicle usage in order to combat carbon emissions and air pollution. The proposed surcharge will be based on the engine capacity of the cars and will apply to passenger cars, jeeps, and microbuses. The finance ministry is considering implementing a carbon tax, similar to other countries, as a means of discouraging the growing use of personal vehicles and reducing pollution.
The surcharge is expected to be included in the budget presentation by the finance minister in parliament on June 1 and will be applicable to all car owners, including companies and firms. With over 57 lakh registered vehicles in Bangladesh, including more than 600,000 personal cars, jeeps, and microbuses, the move comes at a time when the capital city, Dhaka, faces significant air pollution and traffic congestion due to the increasing number of private vehicles. The surcharge amount will vary based on the engine capacity, ranging from Tk 25,000 for cars up to 1,500cc to higher amounts for larger vehicles.
