In 2020, an investigation by Bangladesh Bank into a classified “worst-performing loan” revealed discrepancies that led to the uncovering of a fraudulent loan scheme. Businessman Kamruzzaman Saiddi had secured Tk35 crore in loans from Agrani and Rupali banks using a fake identity. Under central bank pressure, Kamruzzaman repaid Tk2 crore to Rupali Bank with an interest waiver, but Tk32.5 crore loans from Agrani Bank remain unpaid. The investigation revealed that Kamruzzaman used two NID cards to secure loans under other company names. He managed to manipulate the system despite having two CIB IDs with the same name. Agrani Bank suspended an official involved in the scam. Kamruzzaman denied allegations, claiming a conspiracy against him and accusing central bank officials of bribery.
