The FAO has provided silos and cattle feed to 15,110 vulnerable livestock families in five districts of the Jamuna River basin to mitigate the effects of monsoon floods. This effort is part of the project “Protecting Livelihoods Assets through Anticipatory Actions in Flood Prone Communities in Northern Bangladesh” and aims to sustain livestock health and productivity, enhancing community resilience to future disasters. Funded by the UN’s CERF and implemented with UNFPA, UNICEF, WFP, and Bangladesh’s Department of Livestock Services, the project distributes silos for storing food grains, seeds, clean water, and other assets, along with 50 kilograms of concentrated feed for ruminants. Floods often inundate grazing lands and destroy stored feed, leading to feed shortages and forcing farmers to sell livestock or other assets. By ensuring a continuous supply of nutrition for the animals, this initiative helps prevent negative coping strategies and supports long-term productivity and human capital formation in these vulnerable communities.
