Rice prices in Bangladesh have risen, defying the global downturn seen in October, causing hardships for consumers. The FAO All Rice Price Index decreased by 2.0% in October 2023 from the previous month, with export quotations declining in major markets. However, the local market in Bangladesh saw an increase in coarse and medium rice prices in October.
Coarse varieties rose to Tk54-56 per kilogram, and medium varieties increased to Tk62-65 per kilogram, representing a rise of Tk3.0-5.0 per kilogram from September rates. While the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh reported a 2.0-2.5% increase in rice prices, local groceries recorded a 6.0-10% rise. The rise in food prices is adding to the challenges faced by low-income individuals, especially as prices for essential commodities continue to soar. Consumers are urging the government to take action and stabilize prices while expanding subsidized rice sales and considering timely import policies.
