Many Bangladeshi farmers, previously engaged in potato cultivation, are switching to maize farming due to ongoing losses in potato cultivation and the surging demand for maize in animal feed production. The price of maize has risen due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, incentivizing farmers to grow more maize, resulting in reduced potato production.
This potato shortage has caused market instability, with prices soaring to Tk50 per kg, despite the government’s efforts to cap them at Tk35-Tk36. The actual potato production for the year stands at around 85 lakh tonnes, significantly lower than the government’s claim of over 1 crore tonnes.
Simultaneously, maize cultivation has seen a significant increase, with production rising from 49.15 lakh tonnes in FY22 to 64.13 lakh tonnes in FY23. Maize offers lower cultivation costs, higher profitability, and strong market demand, making it a preferred crop for many farmers.
