Female Graduate Unemployment Persists at 18.88%

Economic Tag: Employment

Despite a growing number of female graduates in Bangladesh, they continue to face the highest unemployment rate among graduates, reaching 18.88% in 2022, according to the Labour Force Survey. Out of approximately 800,000 graduates seeking employment, over 336,000 were female and jobless. Experts attribute this high unemployment rate to a lack of job opportunities, an unsupportive work environment, and societal attitudes.

They suggest that proper planning and investment in institutional support for educated female workers are essential. The data also revealed that the unemployment rate among female graduates decreased in rural areas, but rose in urban areas, possibly due to the post-Covid-19 economic impact and limited quality job opportunities for women in formal sectors. Increased participation of women in informal sectors like agriculture was noted, reflecting the economic slowdown. Family pressures and the preference for government jobs after marriage were cited as reasons for this trend.
