The proportion of female workers in Bangladesh’s garment sector has been declining sharply, now accounting for 57 percent of the workforce, down from over 80 percent previously. Historically, women, particularly from rural areas, dominated the sector due to limited job opportunities elsewhere and low per capita income. However, factors like automation, lower wages compared to other sectors, and a growing preference among younger generations for education and corporate jobs have contributed to this decline. The sector’s rapid expansion and the emergence of male-dominated backward linkage industries further skew the gender balance. Despite the sector’s pivotal role in making Bangladesh the second-largest global apparel supplier, female participation is dwindling due to changing economic dynamics and evolving aspirations among women in the workforce.
