The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has imposed a Tk 5 lakh fine on Fiber@Home Ltd. for providing internet services to end users without the required license. In a notice to Fiber@Home, an NTTN (nationwide telecommunication transmission network) service provider, the BTRC instructed the company to acknowledge its violation and pay the fine within 10 working days.
Failure to comply may result in legal action against Fiber@Home, including the possible cancellation of its NTTN license. The BTRC alleged that Fiber@Home was offering broadband internet services using equipment, network operating centers, and servers from other internet service providers under its “Cyclone Project.” This action follows a prior notice issued to Fiber@Home and Fiber@Home Global Ltd. on September 17 for conducting their broadband business through unlicensed internet service providers.
NTTN and IIG (international internet gateway) operators are not allowed to operate as ISPs, according to BTRC regulations. The BTRC has also instructed the two companies to shut down all activities related to the Cyclone Project and called on members of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh to refrain from any activities related to Fiber@Home and Fiber@Home Global’s Cyclone Project.
