Bangladesh Bank reports a financial account deficit surpassing $8.36 billion by February, marking a significant increase from January and a stark contrast to last fiscal year’s $2.32 billion deficit. As per the Global Economic Prospects, import restrictions and rising input costs may hinder private investment, while sluggish export growth to Europe could dampen economic prospects. The World Bank recommends a market-clearing exchange rate mechanism like the crawling peg to bridge formal and informal exchange rate gaps. With gross foreign exchange reserves dropping to $20.8 billion in February 2024, sustaining an effective exchange rate policy becomes crucial, notes the World Bank. Despite improvements in overall balance of payments and a positive current account balance, the growing financial account deficit poses challenges. Trade credit deficit triples compared to last year, indicating delayed export payments and potential inflation of export figures. The deficit widens due to decreased short-, medium-, and long-term loans, with repayment surpassing new loan acquisitions, as per Bangladesh Bank data.
