The first shipment of uranium, the nuclear fuel for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Pabna, Bangladesh, has arrived under heightened security measures. The uranium was transported with special security arrangements due to its sensitivity. The convoy initially faced delays in Gazipur due to a mechanical fault but later resumed its journey.
To ensure security, additional law enforcement agencies were deployed along the Dhaka-Pabna Highway, and checkpoints were established at key locations. Vehicular traffic on the highway was temporarily suspended to prevent potential security risks, and alternative routes were recommended to travelers.
The uranium was supplied via a special air cargo from Russia to Dhaka airport and is set to be officially handed over to the project authority on October 5, 2023. This milestone marks progress in the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, which is expected to commission its first unit in September next year and the second unit in mid-2025, as part of a joint project with Russia’s Rosatom.
