Fishing trawlers in Bangladesh remain idle despite the end of the annual 65-day fishing ban due to rough seas caused by a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. Fishers, who resumed operations on July 23, returned empty-handed due to high wind speeds and large waves. This delay adds to their losses as they already faced a suspension during the ban. Many trawlers in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Barishal, Patuakhali, and Mongla are docked, and owners struggle with ongoing costs despite no earnings. The rough conditions led to the issuance of a Danger Signal No. 3 for seaports, indicating a likely storm. The fisheries sector, contributing 2.43% to GDP, aims to increase export earnings from Tk 500 crore to Tk 1,500 crore by 2041. In fiscal 2021-22, marine fish production was 7.6 lakh tonnes out of a total of 47.59 lakh tonnes. The current weather continues to pose risks, forcing fishers to stay ashore.
