Bangladesh holds the potential to generate 11,000 MWp of electricity from floating solar photovoltaics (FSPV), as revealed by a study conducted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC). FSPV involves mounting solar power plants on water bodies, offering a solution in areas with limited land for conventional solar projects.
IFC identified 10 priority locations with a combined potential of 10.8 GWp for electricity generation. However, the government faces challenges, including limited interest from the private sector in FSPV projects. To realize the full potential, private sector involvement is crucial. IFC is considering pilot projects, while government support remains available. Despite the renewable energy goal of 10% by 2030, Bangladesh has only reached 4%, with solar energy dominating the current renewable capacity.
