Recent flooding in Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts of Sylhet division has severely impacted the fisheries sector, causing losses estimated at Tk 200 million (20 crore). The floods, which occurred three times in recent months, submerged 3,061 ponds over 276 hectares, destroying 1,557 tonnes of fish and 101 tonnes of fries.
In Habiganj, 60 ponds were affected, resulting in losses of Tk 32 lakh in matured fish and Tk 50 lakh in fries, totaling Tk 82 lakh. In Moulvibazar, 3,001 ponds were submerged, leading to losses of Tk 18.45 crore in matured fish and Tk 75 lakh in fries, totaling Tk 19.20 crore. Small and mid-level fish farmers are particularly hard hit and have requested special assistance to recover. However, no support programs have been announced yet.
