Imports of staple foods wheat and rice in Bangladesh declined by 2.76% YoY in FY 2022-23. Wheat imports dropped 3.46% due to falling consumption driven by high prices and the LC-opening crisis amid the US dollar shortage. Government and private sector food grain imports totaled 48.61 lakh tonnes, down 1.38 lakh tonnes from FY 2021-22. Government imports in FY 2022-23 dipped by 1.05%, with private sector imports dropping by 3.31%. The wheat import decrease exceeded that of rice, attributed to supply disruptions from Russia’s Ukraine invasion and India’s export ban. Wheat prices surged internationally, impacting local costs. Industries’ reduced usage for products like biscuits contributed to the decline.
