A recent report by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment highlights Bangladesh’s proactive stance against climate change threats to food security. The country faces intensified climate impacts, combining extreme weather events with the Russia-Ukraine conflict’s economic strain, causing surges in staple food prices. Bangladesh’s long-term commitment to food security, evolving since the 1974 famine, incorporates safety nets, climate-smart agricultural practices, and resilience policies.
The report indicates that under a catastrophic climate change scenario, nearly 5% of the population may experience moderate to severe food insecurity by 2040, reinforcing the need for global climate mitigation efforts. Bangladesh emphasizes adaptation and resilience, promoting climate-smart agriculture, aquaculture, and sustainable practices to navigate climate challenges. Despite progress, concerted efforts are urged to enhance research, consumer protection, and healthcare access in the face of changing climate conditions.
