Foreign exchange reserves have declined to $21.07 billion, compared to $36.40 billion the previous year (2022), marking a substantial $15.33 billion loss in one year, primarily due to a US dollar crisis driven by high import payments, reduced remittances, and increased demand for the greenback. The central bank has been actively supplying USD in the currency market to meet demand, with the inter-bank USD rate at Tk 110.5 and the open market rate at Tk 119. The government has also been selling dollars from its forex reserves to import essential items, further exacerbating the dollar crisis. This decline in reserves raises concerns, as Bangladesh reportedly missed its June 30 target for net foreign exchange reserves set by the International Monetary Fund, a condition for the country’s $4.7 billion loan program.
