Foreign currency reserves could dip below $18 billion when accounting for the central bank’s liabilities, warns a former lead economist at the World Bank’s Dhaka office. Although the central bank currently reports gross foreign reserves of $21 billion in line with IMF guidelines, the situation is more precarious when considering liabilities. The country has been selling over $1 billion worth of US dollars monthly, with foreign currency expenditure exceeding income for 24 consecutive months. If this trend continues, the country may exhaust its foreign currency reserves, leading to an uncontrollable devaluation of the exchange rate. The economist also expressed concerns about income inequality in Bangladesh and its impact on economic growth, emphasizing the need for increased productivity and worker income levels.
