Several foreign firms, in collaboration with local partners, have responded to an international tender by the Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) to lease rooftop spaces at its 13 jute mills for solar power installations. The government aims to expand rooftop solar systems to overcome land constraints. BJMC officials emphasized the preference for foreign investment due to the significant capital required for solar power generation.
The BJMC forwarded the list of interested organizations to the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources for the final decision. Bangladesh’s goal is to generate 10% of its electricity from renewables. The rooftop spaces have the potential to generate approximately 90 MW of solar electricity. Currently, the country receives 154 MW from rooftop solar systems, with 84.588 MW utilizing net metering facilities. The anticipated investment for rooftop solar parks is estimated at $40-$50 million, with 80%-90% expected to come from foreign direct investment (FDI).
