Foreign Reserves Expected to Reach $19.29 Billion

Economic Tag: Forex

Foreign exchange reserves are expected to reach $19.29 billion after clearing import bills of $1.21 billion with the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) for the September-October period. This comes as the country’s forex reserves were recorded at $20.50 billion on October 31, 2023.

The ACU covers monetary transactions for regional imports by nine member countries, including Bangladesh. The continuous erosion of foreign exchange reserves is a concern, driven by a higher dollar outflow compared to inflow. Remittances have been declining, export revenues are falling short of targets, and there is limited new foreign investment.

To address the situation, the government has increased incentives for remittances to 5%, hoping to boost inflows. The exchange rate is also being scrutinized, with calls for a more market-determined approach to solve the financial crisis. Business professionals should closely monitor these developments as they can impact the country’s economic stability and business operations.
