Foreign exchange reserves have decreased to $19.5 billion after the central bank cleared import bills through the Asian Clearing Union (ACU). The country’s gross reserves stood at $25.21 billion after the ACU payment. The decline in reserves indicates a reduced capacity to cover import bills for less than four months, surpassing the IMF’s recommended benchmark of a minimum three-month import cover. The central bank spokesperson mentioned that the forex reserves may increase in the coming weeks as multilateral lenders are expected to clear some installments, including the second installment of a $4.7 billion loan from the IMF next month.
