Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves decreased to $19.52 billion, down from $19.60 billion, as reported by the Bangladesh Bank. The central bank utilized approximately $80 million within a week to address the USD crisis and stabilize the Taka against the US dollar, which had seen depreciation in the kerb market.
Despite the official exchange rate being Tk 111 per USD, the kerb market recorded rates exceeding Tk 120. The country has been grappling with substantial import payments, intensified by the global supply chain disruption caused by the Russia-Ukraine war and increased import prices, leading to a significant USD shortage since last year. The forex reserves, which reached a peak of $48 billion in August 2021, have faced a notable decline.
