Bangladesh’s foreign currency reserves have dropped below $30 billion as the country cleared import bills worth $1.1 billion to the Asian Clearing Union (ACU). The ACU facilitates monetary transactions for regional imports among its nine member countries. According to the Bangladesh Bank, the ACU payments amounted to $1,096 million, leaving the forex reserve at $29.98 billion. While experts consider the reserves stable if they cover three months of import bills, they recommend having buffers for six months during volatile global economic conditions. Despite the decline, experts do not view the current level as concerning. Factors contributing to the reserve decrease include rising imports, lower remittances and export earnings, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The government has taken measures to maintain forex reserves by imposing bans on luxury items, resulting in a decrease in letter of credit openings. In the first eleven months of FY23, LC openings fell by over 25% to $62.4 billion compared to the same period last year. Stay updated on Bangladesh’s forex reserves and their impact on the economy amid ongoing global uncertainties.
