Bangladesh’s foreign exchange reserves are expected to decrease to approximately $30 billion after paying $1.1 billion in import bills through the Asian Clearing Union (ACU). The reserves stood at $31.19 billion as of June 30, 2023. In May, the reserves fell below $30 billion but recovered with support from development partners. The country’s import payments to the ACU have declined due to a drop in imports, falling from $8 billion per month to $5 billion in May. The ACU payments for imports during May-June last year were around $2 billion, compared to slightly over $1 billion for the same period this year. Bangladesh’s merchandise exports grew by 6.67% to $55.55 billion in fiscal year 2022-23, while remittances reached $21.61 billion, a 2.75% increase compared to the previous fiscal year. Net foreign direct investment (FDI) fell by 35.56% in the December quarter of 2022.
