Stringent import restrictions, introduced to tackle the country’s dollar crisis, have led to a significant drop in imports of frozen fish and meat. As a result, domestic meat and fish prices have surged. Imports of frozen boneless bovine meat plummeted by 93%, and frozen fish imports dipped by 82% within a year. This shortage has driven retail prices of beef, buffalo, and goat meat up by Tk300 to Tk350 per kg. The scarcity has also impacted local marine and freshwater fish supplies, causing fish prices to rise 20% to 50%. The import decline is affecting restaurants and hotels, which traditionally rely on frozen meat. The situation prompted the Restaurant Owners Association to appeal for import allowances for beef, goat, and broiler chicken meat.
