The import of furnace oil, primarily used in power plants and industries, has decreased in Bangladesh, affecting revenue collection. Data from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) reveals that in the 11-month period of the current financial year 2022-2023, 31.11 lakh tons of furnace oil, valued at Tk 14,817 crore, were imported, generating government revenue of Tk 3,926 crore.
In comparison, the previous year saw imports of 41.48 lakh tons, worth Tk 20,000 crore, with revenue of Tk 5,000 crore. This represents a 25% decline in furnace oil imports. Chittagong Customs’ revenue fell short of targets, partially attributed to lower furnace oil imports. The reduction in imports has been coupled with challenges in coal and LNG supplies, driving up demand for furnace oil in power generation. Efforts are underway to resume imports, with vessels carrying furnace oil arriving at Chittagong Port.
