Bangladesh’s garment exports to the United States declined by 23.33% YoY, totaling $5.77 billion in January-September. This decrease is attributed to a demand slowdown in the US and an accumulation of stocks. In the same period last year, the country earned $8.28 billion from garment exports to the US. When considering textile and apparel shipments collectively, the earnings amounted to $5.92 billion, marking a 23.88% decrease.
The US is Bangladesh’s largest export destination, with nearly 85% of national export receipts coming from garment shipments. Some exporters suggest that the decline is a correction following a more than 50% surge in US exports last year, anticipating a rebound in shipments by June next year. Despite this, Bangladesh is performing well in new markets such as Japan, South Korea, India, the UK, and some EU countries.
