According to Reuters, the third-largest clothing exporter in the world last year is now facing a cotton shortage due to supply chain disruptions caused by recent political upheaval and flash floods. BKMEA President reported that the supply chain issue is severe, with the country losing 50% of its garment production. Additionally, a former BGMEA president highlighted the impact on her own moderate-sized factory, which normally produces 50,000 shirts per day at a price of $5 each, resulting in a production loss of $250,000.
As a major importer of cotton due to its significant clothing production capacity—accounting for nearly 80% of the country’s annual exports—a BGMEA director emphasized the urgent need to resolve the supply chain issues. He warned that continued delays would exacerbate the situation, leading to even greater difficulties.
