Between August 2024 and mid-April 2025, outstanding dues in Bangladesh’s gas sector dropped by 68%, from $750 million to $240 million, due to an aggressive repayment push by the interim government. Over $500 million was cleared in just six weeks, with $180 million disbursed between April 7–16 alone. Petrobangla nearly doubled its monthly payments, repaying over $500 million to Chevron—Bangladesh’s largest domestic gas supplier—since September. LNG-related dues also declined from $430 million to under $230 million, comprising $114.7 million to Qatar and Oman and $110 million for spot purchases. The Power Development Board contributed Tk2,200 crore in March to settle 70% of dues in the power and fertiliser sectors. This coordinated effort across government agencies, including Bangladesh Bank and the finance ministry, improved supplier confidence, boosted LNG competition, and reduced import costs. However, experts warn against overdependence on LNG imports and urge greater investment in domestic gas exploration for energy security.
