Bangladesh experienced a notable slowdown in economic growth during the last FY 2023-24, with the gross domestic product (GDP) expanding by 5.78%. This figure marks one of the slowest growth rates in the past 13 years, reflecting a decline in consumption levels. The final GDP figures, released by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), revised down the provisional estimate of 6.03% growth announced in May of the previous year. Despite improvements in the agricultural and industrial sectors compared to initial projections, the service sector witnessed a decline in growth. Factors contributing to the slowdown include reduced purchasing power, particularly evident in decreased non-essential spending, alongside sluggish activity in transportation and trade. The industrial sector’s unexpected growth amidst declining imports raises questions, while the agriculture sector’s positive growth remains crucial amid shrinking arable lands.
