The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has signed a contract with the German company ib vogt to establish a 50 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Mirsarai Upazila, Chattogram. The BPDB will purchase electricity from the plant at a rate of $10.94 per kilowatt-hour for 20 years. The project, awarded through a 2019 bidding process, was initially set at an exchange rate of Tk 80 per USD, compared to the current rate of Tk 124 per USD. The plant will be developed on 160 acres of land over 15 months, with a focus on protecting the local hills. The government aims for zero carbon in the energy sector by 2050, with 40% of electricity from clean sources by 2041. Solar power generation is targeted to reach 10,000 MW by 2030, up from the current 600 MW. The plant, to be set up by Sonagazi Solar Power Company, a subsidiary of ib vogt, was initially planned for Sonagazi but has since been relocated.
