Ginger Retail Prices Soar Fourfold Above Import Rates

Industry: Commodity, Consumer & Retail

The price of ginger in Bangladesh has increased by 180% in the past year due to a decrease in imports, a shortage of supply, and increased demand. The government is taking steps to address the price hike by importing ginger and encouraging farmers to grow more ginger. However, the price of ginger is expected to remain high in the near future.

In the last four and a half months, 53 importers imported 6,863 tonnes of ginger at an average rate of Tk 70 per kg through the Teknaf land port. However, the price of ginger in the wholesale market has increased to Tk 220-230 per kg and Tk 270-290 per kg in the retail market. This is due to a decrease in imports, a shortage of supply, and increased demand. The government is taking steps to address the price hike, but it is expected that the price of ginger will remain high in the near future.

The committee stressed the need to inform the public about this concerning issue. The matter was extensively discussed during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, held at the Parliament building.

Loss of duty benefits increased sugar price

June 4, 2023

Speculations of increased import costs have led to a rise in wholesale sugar prices, as the National Board of Revenue (NBR) did not extend duty benefits for sugar imports. The volatility in domestic sugar prices prompted the commerce ministry to request lower duties for refiners in an effort to stabilize the market. In February, the NBR reduced regulatory duty by 5 percentage points and eliminated import duties on unrefined and refined sugar. However, these benefits expired on May 31, resulting in a price increase of Tk 140 to Tk 250 per maund (37 kilograms) of sugar.
