The government has issued tenders to import three spot cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to address increasing energy demand during the summer. These LNG shipments are scheduled to arrive between late May and mid-June. Rising temperatures since March have led to higher energy consumption, prompting the need for additional imports. The winning suppliers will deliver the LNG to either of the country’s two floating storage re-gasification units at Moheshkhali Island. Each cargo will contain about 3.36 million MMBtu of LNG. Bangladesh currently imports LNG via long-term agreements with Qatar and OQ Trading International, as well as from the spot market, but is facing an energy crisis due to declining domestic natural gas production. As a result, gas supplies to industries and power plants are being rationed.
