The government of Bangladesh, in collaboration with the World Bank, has launched a groundbreaking road safety project with the aim of reducing fatalities and injuries caused by road crashes. Valued at Tk 4,988.14 crore, this project marks the World Bank’s first dedicated road safety initiative in South Asia. The funding breakdown consists of Tk 3,759.82 crore from the World Bank and the remaining sum from the government. The project, set to run from May 2023 to June 2028, will be implemented by multiple agencies including the Roads and Highways Department, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, Bangladesh Police, and Directorate General of Health Services. The comprehensive measures will encompass enhanced engineering designs, improved road signs, pedestrian facilities, speed enforcement, and emergency care services. With a particular focus on highways and selected urban areas, the project aims to reduce road traffic deaths by over 30% and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals on road safety by 2030.
