Bangladesh’s interim government expects mobile network operators (MNOs) to soon reduce mobile internet prices following significant wholesale price cuts across the internet value chain. According to Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, the chief adviser’s special assistant, the government has already lowered costs at the International Terrestrial Cable, International Internet Gateway, and National Telecommunication Transmission Network levels. Internet service providers have also doubled internet speeds at the same price point. With mobile operators now having access to Dark Fiber and DWDM infrastructure, Taiyeb insists there is no reason for MNOs to delay passing on the benefits to consumers, noting this would alleviate the impact of inflation. While MNOs have yet to respond officially, a source claims that internet prices are more dependent on taxes and spectrum costs than bandwidth, and DWDM infrastructure is not fully installed yet.
