Govt Advances Plans for Digital Commerce Authority

Industry: E-Commerce

The government is taking steps to establish a Digital Commerce Authority to develop and regulate the emerging e-commerce sector in Bangladesh. The Ministry of Commerce has drafted the Digital Commerce Authority Act and submitted it to the Council of Ministers. It is being discussed in the meeting of the ‘Committee on Providing Opinions on Draft Laws’ of the Cabinet Department.

The draft law proposes that e-commerce or digital commerce companies must operate in the country with a license from the authorities. The authority will be responsible for registering the Digital Business Identity (DBID) of digital companies or institutions and can cancel registration in case of fraudulent activities.

Furthermore, the authority will collaborate with law enforcement agencies to support domestic entrepreneurs in expanding the digital commerce market, increasing exports, inspecting online activities of digital commerce companies, investigating complaints, and assisting in related activities.
