The government has outlined ambitious plans to prioritize the power and energy sector, allocating Tk804 billion over the next two fiscal years to fuel Bangladesh’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2041. For the fiscal year 2024-25, Tk383 billion will be earmarked, followed by Tk421.3 billion for 2025-26, reflecting a concerted effort to bolster infrastructure and capacity.
Over the past decade and a half, significant strides have been made in power generation, with capacity soaring to 27,361 MW from 4,942 MW. Transmission and distribution networks have also expanded substantially, enhancing accessibility and reliability.
Aligned with the 8th Five Year Plan’s objective of generating 10% of electricity from renewable sources, investments in solar power projects have surged. Currently, renewable energy contributes approximately 900 MW to the national grid, with plans underway for additional solar projects and the installation of solar irrigation pumps and home systems in off-grid areas.
