The government has authorized the import of over 5.11 million pieces of non-native vannamei shrimp seed from India, signaling the initiation of commercial cultivation in Bangladesh. Green Bio Tech (BD) Corporation will facilitate the import, strictly for seed production purposes. This move aligns with the government’s aim to diversify the export portfolio by introducing vannamei shrimp farming. Pilot projects since 2020 have shown promise, with successful cultivation by Shushilan. The Department of Fisheries has extended trials to 11 more firms. With vannamei’s competitiveness in global markets and its rising demand, exporters anticipate doubling export earnings within five years. Despite Bangladesh’s potential, current exports meet only a fraction of global demand, emphasizing the sector’s growth prospects.
