The approval of renewable energy-based power projects in Bangladesh has surged, with 350 megawatts already greenlit in the past three months, signaling a shift towards sustainability. An additional 506 megawatts of green power projects await tariff approvals, attracting interest from both local and foreign companies. Last year saw government approval for 2.194 gigawatts of solar power plants to address electricity shortages amidst a dollar crisis. The recent cabinet committee meeting was set to discuss proposals for 506 megawatts of renewable energy projects but was deferred. Proposed projects include a 300-megawatt solar plant in Jamalpur, a 100-megawatt solar plant in Rajbari, a 100-megawatt wind plant in Chattogram, and a six-megawatt waste-to-energy plant in Mymensingh. This shift towards renewable energy reflects the government’s positive stance, aiming to reduce reliance on costly fossil fuels and mitigate emissions, aligning with global sustainability efforts amidst climate change challenges.
