The Bangladesh government has approved the export of 3,000 tonnes of hilsa to India ahead of Durga Puja. Exporters are required to obtain permits from the relevant ministry by September 24. Although an earlier decision aimed to halt hilsa exports to boost local supply, diplomatic efforts led to a reversal. The demand for Bangladeshi hilsa spikes in West Bengal during Durga Puja, prompting this annual export gesture. Concerns have been raised about a potential price hike in local markets as exporters begin procuring hilsa for export. Last fiscal year, Bangladesh exported over 664 tonnes of hilsa to India.
