Bangladesh has approved nearly two dozen firms, including Shell, BP, Aramco, and Glencore, as spot LNG suppliers to boost competition and reduce costs, according to energy minister Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan. Previously dominated by Vitol, Gunvor, and Excelerate Energy, the spot market now includes major global players following the interim government’s move to open tenders. Bangladesh, with a population of 171 million, imported 5.2 million metric tons of LNG in 2023, up 19% year-on-year, spending Tk 60 billion ($504 million). Half of its power plants depend on gas, though many face shortages. The new supplier list replaces the previous 23 firms.
