The government has taken measures to address the volatility in the local egg market by approving the import of four crore eggs from India. The commerce ministry granted approval to four firms, each authorized to import one crore eggs. The imported eggs will be sold at a fixed rate of Tk 12 per piece at the retail level, as determined by the government. The ministry anticipates that the imported eggs will become available in the market within a week after the opening of a Letter of Credit (LC), a process expected to occur in the coming days.
According to the commerce ministry, the country’s daily demand for eggs stands at four crore. Despite the government’s price fixation at Tk 12 per piece on September 14, local shopkeepers in the capital have largely failed to comply with the regulation. In Kolkata, just across the border, chicken eggs were priced at 26 rupees (Tk 34.29) for four pieces, equivalent to Tk 8.5 per piece. The government’s decision to import eggs has been prompted by the persistent high prices in the local market, which have not significantly abated despite the price cap.
