The government’s borrowing from domestic sources surged in the first half of FY25, reaching Tk 31,432 crore—nearly 69 times higher than the previous year—driven by special bonds issued to clear arrears and increased reliance on treasury bills and bonds. While borrowing from scheduled banks contributed significantly, the government repaid Tk 58,116 crore to Bangladesh Bank, aiming to control inflation. Non-bank borrowing also rose sharply, fueled by demand for government securities. With savings instrument sales lagging behind repayments, the government increasingly depends on treasury bonds to secure liquidity while diversifying funding sources.
