The interim government of Bangladesh has canceled the contract with Summit Group for the establishment of the floating LNG terminal (FSRU-3), signed under a special law without a tender process by the previous Awami League government on March 30, 2024. This terminal was to be the country’s third and Summit’s second, following its first FSRU in Maheshkhali.
Petrobangla Secretary Ruchira Islam issued the order for termination. Under the agreement, Summit was set to receive regasification charges of $3 lakh per day for 15 years upon commissioning of the terminal, which had been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement on December 6, 2023. Summit confirmed the execution of the necessary agreements for the project and stated that the termination notice was unjustified, indicating they would appeal for a review. This decision follows allegations of irregularities and corruption against Summit chairman Aziz Khan and his family, resulting in the freezing of their bank accounts.
