In the fiscal year 2023-24, Bangladesh collected approximately Tk 37,915 crore in customs tax from cigarettes, representing 60-80% of the price of each pack. This sector is the largest revenue source for the National Board of Revenue (NBR), with cigarette sales contributing significantly. The cigarette market is valued at over Tk 50,000 crore, with a major share held by a multinational company. In 2023, this company alone generated Tk 40,000 crore from cigarette sales. The VAT department collected Tk 32,816 crore in the previous fiscal year and Tk 37,915 crore in the current one. Tobacco use causes over 161,000 deaths annually in Bangladesh, with economic losses estimated at Tk 30,560 crore in fiscal year 2017-18. The VAT department reported a 20% growth in revenue collection, totaling Tk 1,50,718 crore against a target of Tk 1,51,700 crore. Overall, NBR collected Tk 3,82,562 crore in total revenue for the year, falling short of the initial target of Tk 4,30,000 crore and the revised target of Tk 4,10,000 crore by Tk 47,438 crore and Tk 27,438 crore, respectively.
