State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources has informed the World Bank’s South Asian vice president, that the import of additional electricity from the Indian power market is actively being considered. Minister discussed this during a meeting with an eight-member delegation led by the World Bank’s South Asian vice president at the Bangladesh Secretariat. Minister also mentioned that the import of 500 MW of hydropower from Nepal is nearly finalized, and there is a desire to import more hydropower from Nepal and Bhutan.
The meeting primarily focused on cross-border trade, regional power markets in South Asia, and power imports from Nepal and Bhutan. Minister emphasized that Bangladesh aims to generate 2,000 MW of electricity from renewable sources within the next two years, with plans for an additional 6,000 MW in the pipeline over the next five to six years.
