The government has eased procurement rules to import 1 lakh tonnes of rice faster by reducing the bid submission period from 28 to 15 days, per the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. This is part of a plan to import 700,000 tonnes of rice—the highest in seven years—to stabilize prices and replenish public foodgrain stocks, which fell 22% year-on-year to 11.95 lakh tonnes in December 2023. Additionally, the government approved a Tk 98 crore purchase of 10,000 tonnes of lentils from Nabil Naba Foods Ltd and procurement of 40,000 tonnes of DAP fertiliser and 60,000 tonnes of granular fertiliser. These measures aim to ensure food security and maintain supply stability.
