Amid rising kitchen item prices, the government has formed 37 market monitoring teams to oversee prices in the capital. These seven-member teams, drawn from various ministries and agencies, will conduct anti-price manipulation drives from August 1 until June next year. They will use mobile courts and gather price and stock data. Prices of essentials like rice, eggs, lentils, vegetables, and fish surged by 50 to 120 percent in July, with green chili reaching Tk 600 per kg and eggs Tk 190 per dozen. Traders blamed anti-quota turmoil and movement restrictions for the hikes. The teams will penalize traders if market conditions worsen. Despite regular oversight, supply chain experts say a lack of monitoring allows traders to exploit disruptions. Prices remain high despite some recent declines. The government claims essential prices are stable, with occasional spikes due to natural calamities.
