The government has once again imposed restrictions on rice exports, including various types of aroma rice, citing concerns about the country’s food situation. The decision, based on recommendations from the Food Planning and Monitoring Unit, was conveyed through a letter from an Agriculture Ministry policy unit to key authorities, including the Bangladesh Bank governor and the National Board of Revenue chairman.
The Food Planning and Monitoring Unit had proposed these restrictions on October 8, emphasizing the overall food situation. In September, the agriculture ministry had already suspended rice exports for ensuring food security. Despite a ban on rice exports, aroma rice could be exported with government permission, and in 2021, 28 firms were permitted to export around 25,000 tonnes of aroma rice. Although export restrictions were imposed in 2022, they were lifted a few months ago. Varieties like Kalijira, Chinigura, Kataribhog, Basmati, Tulsimala, and BR-38 were included in the aroma rice export list.
