The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in Bangladesh has initiated a project with an estimated cost of Tk 400 crore to enhance milk and meat production across the country. The project, titled ‘Proven Bull Development Project to Increase Milk and Meat Production,’ will be implemented in all upazilas (sub-districts) of the country over five years, starting from July 2023.
The primary aim of the project is to develop proven bulls to boost and sustain cow productivity, conserve indigenous cattle breed genetics, and enhance the skills of farmers and department personnel for increased milk production. The project proposal is currently under scrutiny by the Planning Commission, which has suggested the involvement of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) due to its research-oriented nature and prior experience in similar projects. The project envisions selecting and developing proven bulls, distributing semen for artificial breeding, and training farmers, benefiting both livestock production and food security in Bangladesh.
