The Payra 1,320MW Thermal Power Plant in Patuakhali, Bangladesh, has halted operations due to a lack of coal supply, resulting in a daily capacity payment burden of Tk 7.66 crore for the government. With two units completely shut down, the monthly capacity payment amounts to Tk 230 crore. The plant requires 12,000 tonnes of coal per day to generate 1,320 megawatts of electricity. The coal supply is expected to resume with the arrival of a ship by the end of the month of June, according to the plant’s Superintend Engineer. However, Assistant Manager indicated that operations may not resume until next month (July). The Payra plant’s shutdown has exacerbated the country’s load-shedding crisis, which reached 2,675MW at 12 pm on Monday, significantly impacting the electricity supply.
